Manitoba Soy Beans

Manitoba spray-free soy beans.

Grown on Little Mountain Farm (just inside the perimeter – pretty much as close to home as you get get!), and milled/processed by Adagio Acres.  Little Mountain Farm  does not use any synthetic chemicals for fertilizers/pesticides/herbicides, but because most of their crops are used as feed for their own animals, or used by their community store and bakery (Yellow Deli on Des Meurons), they do not have third party certification.  Certification is most necessary when selling products into the commodity market, but many farmers choose not to go through certification when they are their own customer!

These soybeans were grown as a feed grain for the animals on Little Mountain Farm, but we’re happy that they had higher yields than anticipated, and so have a bit left over that we could snaffle up!  Soybeans are actually uncommon to find on organic farms in Manitoba (long story…they are very very common on conventional farms, but the lack of organic livestock in the province means no market for grains that are commonly grown for feed…and worldwide, a teeny tiny percentage of soybeans are actually eaten by humans, and most are fed to animals).  We’ve had lots of requests for them over the past few years, and so when we stumbled across this small batch of soybeans, we were quick to snaffle them up.

Perfect for a mixed bean chili, winter soup, hummus, or delving into that crazy world of soymilk, tempeh, or tofu.  There have also been a lot of recipes shared on our “Winter Grain CSA” facebook group back from 2019 (the last time I was able to find soybeans…).
