We love growing stuff – and we’re going to be teaming up with some serious green thumbs for a few demos on caring for and preparing some of your favourite grow-ables. Join us at Sabados’ Greenhouse at 2:00 this Saturday for some information sessions with Karen and Allan Sabados about cooking with herbs and planting and caring for your trees. I’ll be there to talk about growing grains, sprouting your own naked oats, and all things oat-y. Check out their website (www.sabadosgreenhouse.ca) for more information, and i’ll see you there!

Winter has officially been banished, because Crampton’s Market on Waverly St. (www.cramptonsmarket.com) is opening today for their summer season! Check out their fresh local veggies, bakery, and grocery selection, including our very own Rolled Naked Oats!

The resiliency of nature is inspiring. After such a long and unrelenting winter, it’s hard to believe that the soil underneath our feet can still support life. But just one sunny day was enough to chase the snow off the garden, and by the end of the day we were already eating vibrantly flavoured parsley from last year’s plants! Looking at last year’s calendar (the oat seeds were already in the field, starting to send out roots and find water and nutrients from the soil) and the snowdrifts outside, we were starting to get worried about this coming season. But walking out to our fields yesterday we found a small flock of sandhill cranes, gleaning the grains from last year’s harvest. They know the abundance of summer is coming!

We are very happy that so many of you are graciously putting up with the occasional hull in their morning oats, but we are starting to get a bit weary of the hand-sorting that has been necessary to somewhat reduce the number of hulls that make their way to your bowl. You might ask, “but why are there hulls in a hull-less oat anyways?” Naked oats are encased in a hull to protect them as they grow, but they are easily removed in the field at harvest. However, about 5% of the oat groats retain their hull (perhaps these naked individuals are somewhat more modest?), and we have been working with a number of different processes to sort out or remove those hulled grains.
This past weekend, our quest brought us to an auction in Tyndall, where we thought we might pick up an old fanning mill to aid us in our seed-sorting venture. As auctions will go, we were outbid in the end, and had to say goodbye to this beauty. We’re not giving up yet, and we did get some great 2 litre glass-top canning jars and a not-quite-antique-but-certainly-not-new table and chairs for our dining room. $35 can go pretty far at a farm auction in Manitoba, but a fanning mill was probably a lot to ask!

It’s been a busy morning stirring up a gigantuous batch of Oatmeal Apple Spice Cookies. Are the kids that hungry? Not quite (but they’ve certainly eaten their fair share!). We’re going to be in De Luca’s Specialty Foods tomorrow from 11-3, talking about our farm, local food, and why Naked Oats are a great way to eat healthy! Come join us to enjoy a cookie or two to munch on as you peruse the always-interesting offerings of De Luca’s (http://www.deluca.ca/) at 950 Portage Ave.

It’s still cold out there, but we’re going to help you ward of the “it’s-still-winter blues” with a special promotion at Generation Green at the Forks. We’ll be at the Forks on Saturday March 30 from 1-3 munching on our Naked Monster Cookies (free for the sampling) and talking about our farm and how we get Naked Oats to your table. Our rolled oats will also be on sale to help you stock up your pantry and make it through the frosty mornings with steaming bowls of locally grown Naked Oatmeal. See you there!

Organza is getting naked! We’re going to be doing a product demo at Organza Market on Osborne this Saturday. We’ll be offering Naked Monster Cookies to everyone in the store, talking about our farm, and of course, Rolled Naked Oats will be offered at promotional pricing on that day. See you there!

If you’ve been on the lookout for Naked Oats your search just got easier! We are now on the shelves at Organza Market on Osborne, Mondragon in the exchange district, and Organic Planet on Westminster.
On an unrelated note, I also hope to be adding a page about oats and gluten in response to a lot of questions that i’ve received on the topic. Hopefully this will help to clarify some of the confusion!

We are excited that Adagio Acres Naked Oats are now available at two fantastic food retailers in Winnipeg. Look for us at De Luca’s Specialty Foods and at Generation Green (in the Forks Market). Thanks to Sherry at Generation Green for her enthusiasm and encouragement, and for posting about us on her website (http://generationgreenwpg.com/2013/03/07/lets-get-naked/).
As much fun as we’ve had looking at our full grain bin and thinking about a life time supply of oatmeal cookies, oatmeal cake, oatmeal bread, oatmeal pancakes, oatmeal muffins, oat-y apple crisp, oat-y granola, oat-y pumpkin snack bars, oat-groat tabouli (oops, getting hungry!), and oat-groat rice under oat-y meatballs, perhaps it’s time to start sharing the harvest!
There are clearly mixed feelings about this prospect at our house. Eli must have been ‘reading’ over my shoulder as I wrote this, because he found his way to the oat-y bread dough on the counter and dug in. I was starting to feel guilty that our children wouldn’t even know what to do with a fruit loop if it fell out of the sky and landed in their porridge, but he doesn’t look too upset about the oats that sneak their way in to almost every meal!

The past few months of getting set up, experimenting, and eating a LOT of oats have been fun, and now we are just about rolling! We hope you enjoy reading about our approach to food and farming, mud puddles and morning porridge. Packaging is being printed this week, and then we are ready to hit the shelves. See you in the breakfast aisle!
